Diarrhoea is condition when a person facing the problem of high frequency of bowel movement or decrease in the form of stool. When a person suffers from diarrhoea the person faces issue with looseness of stools. Diarrhoea is different from conditions like inconsistency of stool, rectal urgency, incomplete evacuation and heavy bowel movement. There are two types of diarrhoea, absolute or acute and chronic. Let’s look at types of diarrhoea and bloating because of diarrhoea here.
Diarrhoea and bloating
Absolute diarrhoea can be defined based on the frequency of bowel movement or on the basis of consistency of stool. In absolute diarrhoea the bowel movement is more in comparison to normal state. In a healthy individual the maximum number of daily bowel movement is around three times. Where else in absolute diarrhoea the number is more than three. Absolute diarrhoea is hard to define on the basis of stool consistency; stool consistency may vary even in healthy person depending upon the diet. Person who eats more might have looser stool than one who eat less. Where else if the stool is in liquid form or watery then it’s the sure symptom of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is related to bowel movement and stool consistency, where else bloating is a discomfort to stomach.
Bloating is abnormal swelling and pain is stomach, as a symptom patient feels over eaten, tightness and fullness in the stomach.
Causes of diarrhoea and bloating:
The most common cause of diarrhoea in acute case is infection due to viral, bacterial or due to parasitic infections. Bacteria are one of the major causes of acute food poisoning. Viral infection in stomach and in small intestine is a very common cause of acute diarrhoea and the typical symptoms of diarrhoea include nausea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. In case of acute diarrhoea due to viral infection patient don’t face any kind of problem like blood or pus in stool. Food poisoning is also seen as the common cause of diarrhoea produced by bacteria. This causes abdominal pain and vomiting and also cause large amount of secretion of water from small intestine. The symptoms of diarrhoea in case of food poisoning usually last less than 24 hours. Acute diarrhoea also occurs due to travelling in places where climate is warm where you might eat contaminated food. Due to which toxin produces in the stomach and it causes abdominal cramps, nausea and sometimes even vomiting and all these are sign of diarrhoea. Sometimes cause of acute diarrhoea is also some kind of medications that contain magnesium. Apart from this, common causes of chronic diarrhoea are IBS-irritable bowel syndrome, infectious disease, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, carbohydrate mal absorption and fat mal absorption.
Causes of bloating are formation of gas in the stomach due to undigested food and sometimes due to food that have high protein, carbohydrates and fats. Milk products and products that contain gluten produce gas in the digestive system. The cause of bloating is mainly improper working of digestive system. Common symptoms of bloating are pain in the stomach, heaviness and discomfort in sleeping.
Treatment of diarrhoea and bloating:
The treatment of diarrhoea and bloating includes medications like absorbents, which absorbs water. There are two main absorbents that are available without prescription, they are attapulgite and polycarbophil. These absorbents bind water in the small intestine and make the diarrheal stools less watery. Apart from these binders, another treatment for diarrhoea is anti motility medication which includes drugs to relax the muscles of small intestine and colon. The relaxation results in slower flow of intestinal contents, this allow more water to be absorbed from intestine and to reduce the water in stool.
Treatment of bloating consists of medications like food enzymes, some charcoal tablets and antacids, all these medication provide good relief during bloating.
It is recommended that person suffering from diarrhoea and bloating should take a balance diet to avoid the problems caused due to diarrhoea and bloating.
